WILSON, Angus. The Middle Age of Mrs. Eliot. London: Secker and Warburg. 1958. 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher’s burgundy cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the striking dust jacket designed by Michael Ayrton. A near fine copy, the cloth boards clean and bright, the binding tight and square, the contents fine but for large ink ownership inscription to front endpaper. The dust jacket unclipped (18s net) and complete, very gently bumped at extremities though much sharper than often found.

The author’s third novel, lauded as one of the great portraits of middle-aged women in fiction, following well-to-do Meg Eliot in her fatefully necessary transformation from coddled wife to independent woman. Winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.
