TOOLE, John Kennedy. A Confederacy of Dunces. London: Allen Lane. 1981. 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s cream cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the marvellous dust jacket designed by Ed Lindlof. A near fine copy, being a much better than usual example—a production issue synonymous with this particular edition causes the backstrip to heavily tone which usually spreads to the endpapers, the textblock becomes wavy, and the dust jacket spine panel faded significantly. Here, the backstrip toning is gleefully less severe, and the contents are clean and fine throughout without issue. The textblock is a touch wavy, though this is only noticeable from bottom edge. The dust jacket unclipped (£7.95 net) and suffering from some of the aforementioned fading to spine and upper section of the rear panel, but otherwise fine and very sharp indeed. Uncommon in such condition.
The first British edition of perhaps the funniest book ever written, ‘a masterwork of comedy’ which follows the wildly misanthropic Ignatius J. Reilly whose loquacious, valve-opening voice WILL infect your inner monologue. Posthumously published at great emotional strain by the author’s ahem, zany mother, on account of the author’s suicide some eleven years prior to publication—Walker Percy also of great importance in bringing the book to the masses, the novel going on to win the Pulitzer Prize the following year. As good as anything this cataloguer has read, if that provides any credence. Scarce.
