TAYLOR, Elizabeth. Hester Lilly and Other Stories

£80.00

TAYLOR, Elizabeth. Hester Lilly and Other Stories. London: Peter Davies. 1954. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s pale red cloth lettered in white to the spine, in the typographical dust jacket. A very good copy. The cloth clean and bright, perhaps very faint vertical crease to backstrip. The binding tight and square, with some faint spots to the textblock edges. The contents fine but for ink ownership signature to front endpaper. The dust jacket unclipped (10s 6d net) with several small tears to the spine joints, corners and some edges. A couple other nicks to joints and light creasing.

The author’s first collection of short stories, some of which had already appeared in the US and elsewhere. Through the stories ‘we see the mute agonies of a long marriage; the emotional deserts lurking in the English countryside; and old ruffian’s sense of suffocation in a genteel community for the blind; or the freshness and oddity of children’s perceptions.’ (Virago). Uncommon.
