ROUX, Edward. Time Longer than Rope: A History of the Black Man’s Struggle for Freedom in South Africa. London: Gollancz. 1948. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the fragile dust jacket with the publisher’s wraparound belly band. The publisher’s retained copy with ‘archive copy’ stamp to the half-title only. An otherwise splendid copy, the cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square, the contents fine. The dust jacket unclipped (18/- net) with the corners and spine tips gently rubbed and a trifle nicked. The bellyband a touch faded at spine, but uncommon enough.
A ‘genuine pioneering effort’ to understand the social, political, and cultural struggles of black people in South Africa from Eddie Roux, who was predominantly a botanist. Roux, a Communist, began writing the work in 1935 and finished it in 1939. The outbreak of war halted publication, and with the impending coming to power of apartheid-supporting D. F. Malan, Roux updated the manuscript to 1946 and publication followed. The result is an authoritative history of struggle and strife which garnered much acclaim and support for Roux, whose academic career was continuously stifled by pro-apartheid agents.
