RICHLER, Mordecai. A Choice of Enemies

£50.00

RICHLER, Mordecai. A Choice of Enemies. London: Andre Deutsch. 1957. 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher’s red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the sumptuous dust jacket designed by Heather Standring. A very good copy, the cloth clean and bright, just a trifle pushed at spine tips. The binding tight and square, the contents generally clean and fine but for some faint spots to endpapers and textblock edges. The dust jacket unclipped (13s 6d net), the spine panel slightly faded, corners and tips slightly nicked and rubbed but a smart copy overall.

The Canadian-born author’s third published novel, likely at least somewhat a roman a clef, following a group of dissident Canadians who move to London in the 1950s. Richler spent much of his writerly career in London after spending time in Paris. The illustrator, Heather Standring, produced a relatively small cache of dust jacket designs, and this one is a particularly impressive one.
