PLISNIER, Charles. Sabine

£150.00

PLISNIER, Charles. Sabine. Trans. from the French by Moura Budberg. London: Vision Press. 1954. 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the fabulous dust jacket designed by Wendy des Moulins. A very good copy. The cloth clean and bright, the binding tight and square. The textblock edges and endpapers spotted with mild spots to prelims, else clean. The dust jacket price-clipped, the spine panel toned, with several small nicks and chips to tips and corners, rubbing, but a bright copy overall.

A very scarce title by the Prix Goncourt-winning author, posthumously published. It follows the eponymous Sabine in her ‘infinitely poignant love story’ and her struggle with feelings of inferiority. Wendy des Moulins, the jacket illustrator, worked closely with Peter Owen and Vision Press for several volumes—a scantily-clad woman and her rejoicing lover fondling away a much-used motif. I can find little on the artist.
