PINKERTON, Robert E. The Fourth Norwood

£100.00

PINKERTON, Robert E. The Fourth Norwood. London: Hurst and Blackett. n.d. [1925]. 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s cherry red cloth lettered in black to the spine and upper board, in the dust jacket. The book very good, clean, bright, the corners sharp, the binding tight and square. Some light spots to the top and fore-edge, the contents fine but for small previous owner signature to front endpaper. The dust jacket priced 7/6 net to the spine, with several chips and tears to the spine panel with tape repairs to verso. Other chips, loss, nicks and closed tears to other edges, but a very uncommon book and remarkably so in the dust jacket.

An intriguing novel by the American newspaperman turned bushman-novelist. After marrying his wife in the first decade of the twentieth century, the Pinkertons opted to live off-grid, building a one-room cabin in the wilds of Ontario, Canada and surviving there for some years, child and all. The pair wrote individually and together, the simple aim to sell their stories and maintain their lifestyle. Even after returning, their adventurous spirits led to a nomadic life via train, boat, and car. Most stories and novels by Robert were adventure stories of life in the bush, often as in this case with criminous elements; a young fur trader’s father is murdered and all clues lead to the legless trapper, ‘Spider’. Scarce.
