ORWELL, George. Down and out in Paris and London

£125.00
sold out

ORWELL, George. Down and out in Paris and London. London: Secker and Warburg. 1966. 8vo. Reprint. Publisher’s green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the wonderful dust jacket designed by Denis Piper. A very good or better copy, the cloth clean and bright, the backstrip a trifle discoloured, the binding tight and square. The contents fine throughout with bright topstain. The dust jacket price-clipped with publisher’s reprice sticker of 25/- to flap, generally sharp though with triangular tear to front panel bottom corner, a couple of small closed tears to joints, other minor marks but sharp overall.

Orwell’s first full-length work, published eventually and with several amendments by Gollancz; both Jonathan Cape and Faber and Faber had previously rejected the work. His mostly autobiographical account of life in the slums of Paris and London, depicting scenes of a daily life totally alien to his intended readership.
