Ondaatje’s compulsive fictional account of Buddy Bolden, the legendary New Orleans trumpet player and, arguably, originator of jazz. Bolden’s extroverted, frenetic style is played off against his gradual decay into schizophrenia and insanity, and Ondaatje does much to animate this through his often wonderful syntax. An underrated little thing.
