NIVEN, Frederick. Dead Men’s Bells (association copy)

£150.00

NIVEN, Frederick. Dead Men’s Bells (association copy). London: Martin Secker. 1912. First edition. The author’s mother’s copy, inscribed as such by Niven. Despite being forgotten in his adopted Canada and his homeland Scotland, Niven does have a Scottish literary award named after him and produced a good body of work, dedicating his life to literature. Well-travelled, he wrote articles in most British newspapers, and served in the Ministry of Food in WWI—under John Buchan. This is one of his better-treated Scottish novels in which the protagonist crashes into a pirate ship. A very good book, the binding tight and slightly rolled, the spine panel heavily faded, in the scarce dust jacket, the spine panel lacking, other panels with a few shallow chips and bumps. Scarce, especially signed.
