NABOKOV, Vladimir. Lolita

£350.00

NABOKOV, Vladimir. Lolita. London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 1959. 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in silver gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket designed by Eric Ayres. A very good or better example. The cloth with a few mild marks, the gilt to spine a touch dulled. The binding tight and square, slightly pulled at p.30 gutter, minor, and the topstain slightly faded. The contents clean and about fine, with very faint abrasion—perhaps an eraser—to the front endpaper centre, but without any stamps, inscriptions, or foxing whatsoever. The dust jacket price-clipped, gently marked vertically to the spine panel, and with light creasing to front flap towards joint. Gently bumped with a few mild nicks. A very pleasing example of an edition usually much worse for wear.

Certainly Nabokov’s most notable work, the story of the paedophile Humbert Humbert and the ‘fire of his loins’, the 12-year-old Dolores Haze. Originally published in Paris in 1955 by Olympia Press, this British edition appeared four years later, after a two-year long public seizure of smuggled copies into Britain. The fragile wrapper is usually torn and chipped—this copy refreshingly sharp, uncommon thus.
