NABOKOV, Vladimir. Lolita. London: Weidenfeld & Nicolson. 1959. 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in silver gilt to the spine, in the dust jacket designed by Eric Ayres. A fine example, the cloth clean, bright and sharp, the binding tight and square, the contents clean and fine throughout with a bright, unfaded publisher’s topstain. The dust jacket unclipped (21s net) with faint vertical impression to the spine panel and some very mild marks to spine and front panel.

An exceptional example of certainly Nabokov’s most notable work, the story of the paedophile Humbert Humbert and the ‘fire of his loins’, the 12-year-old Dolores Haze. Originally published in Paris in 1955 by Olympia Press, this British edition appeared four years later, after a two-year long public seizure of smuggled copies into Britain. The fragile wrapper is usually worse for wear—this copy refreshingly sharp and vibrant, very scarce thus.
