£45.00

MÉGROZ, Rodolphe Louis. Letters of Women in Love: Disclosing the Female Heart from Girlhood to Old Age. London: Thornton Butterworth. 1929. Thick 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s attractive blue patterned cloth lettered in black to the spine and upper board, blindstamped publisher’s crest to bottom edge, in the plain dust jacket. A near fine copy, the cloth clean and bright, the extremities gently rubbed, the binding tight and square. The contents clean, pencil inscriptions to front endpaper and some light toning. The dust jacket priced 7/6 net to spine, spine panel darkened, gently rubbed elsewhere with odd faint pencil marks to front panel, but a well-preserved copy.

A thorough anthology of letters written by women to their respective lovers. The anthology is divided into three sections (‘Fiancees’, ‘Wives’, and ‘Lovers’) and contains famous and less famous letters from Abigail Smith to John Adams, Dorothy Osborne to William Temple, Anne Boleyn to Henry VIII, Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Robert, Mary Shelley to Percy, and many others including letters from women to family members, Jane Austen to Francis Austen, Queen Mary, Queen Victoria, etc. etc. The compiler, Mégroz, was a serial biographer, with studies on Joseph Conrad, the Sitwells, Edward Lear, William Shakespeare, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and others.
