The boards a touch mottled and stained, the binding tight and square, gently bumped at extremities. The contents generally fine, with some stains to endpapers at gutters, a few mild marks elsewhere. The dust jacket unclipped with some mild loss to spine head, trivially nicked elsewhere with a few pale stains.
Romance plays out between a beautiful young Hungarian countess and a brilliant Jewish musician set amid the ruins of Budapest towards the end of the Second World War, capturing ‘the anguish and courage of bombed, cold, starved, pillaged people’. The author used a pseudonym here—I cannot trace her real name—for she experienced first-hand the horrors first of the Nazi domination of Budapest, and later the Red siege.
