FIFTEEN VOLUMES FROM THE SCIENCE FICTION BOOK CLUB (SFBC). London: SFBC. 8vos. 1960-70. Publisher’s original boards in dust jackets, mostly by Terry James. Most fine or near fine; gentle rubbing in places, one copy ex-library and not SFBC (Household) but comes from the same collection. Dust jackets with light marks and mild rubbing, but sharp overall.
A handsome assortment here, with many big-hitting names present—Poul Anderson, William Hjortsberg, Frederick Pohl, Harry Harrison, Jack Vance, J. T. Macintosh, etc. Of special relevance is the dust jacket designer, Terry James, who creates this spectral vision of the genre in somewhat uniformity and with a style that is totally barebones. SFBC started in the early 1950s, the Book Club arm of Sidgwick and Jackson. Various editors ensured (mostly) the use of a single designer to illustrate their jackets. CW Bacon was the first, then John Griffiths. James took the lead around 1968 until 1971, and this seems to signal all of his work in the medium. Evidently a very talented graphic designer, I can find little else on the man.
