If internet trivia is at all credible, Hayes spent some time globetrotting the world, living and indeed writing out of a suitcase, or briefcase, even, living in Paris, Western Samoa, the Cook Islands, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and French Polynesia before settling in St. John’s Wood and, for a time, neighbouring Noel Coward and Marlon Brando.
