GRAY, Alasdair. Lanark (signed limited edition)

£200.00
sold out

GRAY, Alasdair. Lanark: A Life in 4 Books. Edinburgh: Canongate. 1985. 8vo. Limited edition. Publisher's black cloth boards tooled elaborately in gilt with one of the author's often-used motifs, 'endure, you are not alone'. In the dust jacket also designed by the author. One of a limited edition of 1000 copies signed by the author, this number 821. A near fine copy, the cloth clean with small and minor mark to centre of front board, but the binding tight and square. The textblock a trifle spotted and scuffed to base, but the contents fine. The dust jacket unclipped (£15) and complete, with a little of the fading often encountered with this particular volume, and a couple of light marks only. A smart example.

Gray's magnum opus. One of the best books to have been published in the last fifty years (in this bookseller's opinion) and still wildly under-appreciated. After fairly strong sales from the 1981 first edition, publishers Canongate opted for a second impression. Gray, ever the controller of his own world, insisted the boards be decorated in stylish gilt. By way of compromise, Gray agreed to sign 1000 copies in a limited edition instead of a second printing.
