FUCHS, Daniel. Summer in Williamsburg. London: Constable. 1935. 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s green cloth lettered in purple to the spine, in the dust jacket designed by Malcolm Easton. A very good copy. The cloth with two faint diagonal stains to front and rear boards, presumably a production issue, and the extremities a trifle bumped. The binding tight and square, the contents clean and fine throughout, with small bookshop label to front pastedown. The dust jacket price-clipped, with several shallow nicks to spine tips, corners and other edges gently bumped with mild closed tears, but still a presentable example.
The author’s filmic first novel, a panoramic portrait of the motley and crowded Jewish suburb of Depression-era Brooklyn, evidently drawn upon Fuchs’ own life experiences. He would go on to write two further novels in a loose trilogy sometimes referred to as the Williamsburg Trilogy, but he soon after turned to scriptwriting. The dust jacket, designed by the biographer of Augustus John, perfectly encapsulates the hustle and bustle of the neighbourhood.
