Some spots to the textblock edges, two previous owner signatures to front endpapers (one pen, one pencil), with some mild offsetting here, else clean throughout. Newspaper clipping loosely inserted. The dust jacket unclipped (7s 6d net) and generally complete, though with large tear along much of the rear panel, the spine panel dulled, chipped at tips, the front panel complete, grubby with several stains, but the bunch of grapes…juicy?

He swoons for a girl his own age, but she marries a husband only a few years older, though thought of as a grown man while Dominique is still a schoolboy. Hailed as a masterpiece from publication, the original version was dedicated to George Sand—the humble dedication remains here— and in the translator’s preface, he expresses his surprise that he is the first to translate the work into English, despite a healthy list of devotees across Britain. Scarce, even considering condition issues to the jacket.
