DUNSANY, Edward Plunkett, Lord. A Night at an Inn

£40.00

DUNSANY, Edward Plunkett, Lord. A Night at an Inn. London: Putnam. n.d. c. 1920. 35pp. 8vo. softcover wraps. Early edition. Green wraps with a charming wraparound design by Sidney Sime. Near fine. The covers just slightly stained to front cover lower corner, with some mild rubbing to extremities. The contents fine.

A delightful early example of one of Dunsany’s most recognised plays, which he described 'merely a story of some sailors who have stolen something and know that they are followed. Possibly it is effective because nearly everybody, at some time or other, has done something he was sorry for, has been afraid of retribution, and has felt the hot breath of a pursuing vengeance on the back of his neck.... A Night at an Inn was written between tea and dinner in a single sitting. That was very easy.'" The romantic design to card wrappers is by Sidney Sime, the British artist closely aligned to much of Dunsany’s early work, and whose influence on the fantasy genre spanned many generations after. Uncommon.
