DRUMMOND, C. H. A Message to Burgos

£375.00

DRUMMOND, C. H. A Message to Burgos. London: Thornton Butterworth. 1938. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s dark red cloth lettered in black to the spine, in the striking dust jacket designed by Bip Pares. A very good copy. The cloth clean and bright, corners gently bumped. The binding tight and square, mild spots to textblock edges. The contents very lightly and evenly toned throughout from paper stock quality, with some sporadic foxing affecting prelims and terminals, else largely clean throughout. With ink gift inscription to front endpaper. The dust jacket price-clipped with reprice sticker of 4/6 net to spine. Several small nicks and chips to extremities, some closed tears and light marks, but uncommon enough.

In the weeks before the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, two Republicans endeavour to smuggle an important document into the heart of Franco’s porto-government setup in Burgos, but amid the political intrigue and growing paranoia that bubbles and swells moves ‘El Hungaro’, the inhuman Hungarian, ‘the Supreme Butcher of Bolshevism who made the Danube run red’. Romance is present between the two protagonists, but is mired by the threat of civil war. Bip Pares’ dust jacket design perfectly encapsulates this, with our two protagonists swallowed up by something much larger than them. Scarce. OCLC locates nine copies.
