Publisher’s deep red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine with a blindstamped design to front board and ornate gilt design to the spine. A very good copy, the cloth clean, the corners and spine head and tail gently bumped and pushed, the gilt design to spine dulled. The binding tight and square, just starting at the title page gutter but holding well. The contents usually clean, ink gift inscription to front endpaper, the endpapers with offsetting, and faint indentation inscription pressed into the title page (indentation only), but otherwise clean and bright.
Frederick Whishaw produced the first English translation of Dostoevsky’s magnum opus, but it is this, Constance Garnett’s 1914 translation that dominated the twentieth century. This is the first edition of that translation. Garnett became the preeminent Russian translator, translating sometimes for the first time the works of Tolstoy, Turgenev, Chekhov, Gogol, and others. This edition is scarce, especially so in such smart condition.
