First edition, being one of a limited edition of 100 copies privately printed and each numbered and signed by the author, this number 48, additionally inscribed by Davies below limitation statement, ‘to P. J. Woods, with compliments’ and initialed, and additionally signed by the artist, William Roberts, above the frontispiece, a portrait of Davies by Roberts. Attractive patterned softcover wraps with title label to centre. The spine slightly rubbed and nicked, corners less so. The binding sound, the contents generally fine, some mild browning to extremities and ink ownership inscriptions inside front cover, printed on fragile paper. Very good.
The author’s first published work, collecting six short stories, several of which first appeared in The New Coterie, the short-lived quarterly Modernist magazine which published the likes of D. H. Lawrence, Karel Capek, Liam O’Flaherty and Aldous Huxley. It is for this magazine that Roberts was commissioned to draw his friend as frontispiece. Roberts also produced the cover for The New Coterie and the jacket design for Davies’ first novel, The Withered Root, (1927). Scarce.
