CAPPON, T. M. Then Now and Whither

£200.00

CAPPON, Thomas Martin. Then Now and Whither. Actions and Reactions of a Business Man. Edinburgh and London: The Moray Press. 1935. Tall 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in gilt to spine and upper board, in the dust jacket. This copy signed and inscribed by the author’s son, Denis Cappon. With a chapbook by the author entitled ‘A Chat with Youth’ (1937) loosely inserted. A near fine copy. The cloth clean, the boards a trifle dulled, the binding tight and square. The contents clean and fine throughout with some mild spots to textblock edges. The dust jacket unclipped (7s 6d net), water-spots to spine panel, mild marks and bumps elsewhere, but a sharp copy overall.

A generous memoir by one of Scotland’s most notable architects, who designed Lady Leng Memorial Chapel in St. Andrews, St.Patrick’s Church in Dundee, and the Airlie Monument in Cortachy among other monuments. His firm were leading architects in Angus before he realigned the business to focus on architecture for private housing. Cappon underwent National Service, visited South Africa extensively, and served as a volunteer in the Black Watch, all of which is touched upon here. The accompanying brief chapbook based on his lecture, ‘An Address to the Young People’s Association of Dundee Parish Church’ asserts his message to youth: ‘keep your eye on the ball and follow through’. Scarce.
