CAMUS, Albert. The Outsider

£750.00

CAMUS, Albert. The Outsider. Trans. from the French by Stuart Gilbert. London: Hamish Hamilton. 1946. Thin 8vo. First British edition. Publisher’s pale green cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the striking dust jacket designed by Edward Bawden. A very good copy, the cloth a trifle pushed around spine tips and very slightly discoloured at extremities. The binding tight and square, the contents generally fine with some very mild marks to top edge. The dust jacket unclipped (6s net) and largely complete, with shallow chips to the spine head and tail, corners and some edges slightly nicked and rubbed, some closed tears, most noticeably to front panel top edge with discreet adhesive tape repair to verso. A handsome and well-preserved example.

A staple of twentieth century French literature and cornerstone text in Camus’s philosophy of absurdism. A favourite of this cataloguer’s, the novel begins with one of literature’s most recognised openings: “Mother died to-day. Or, maybe, yesterday; I can’t be sure.” A very presentable copy of an increasingly scarce and important title. Married to the text of this English edition is the marvellous dust jacket by Edward Bawden, one of his finest and most famous designs.
