BURNS, Alan. Celebrations

£125.00

BURNS, Alan. Celebrations. London: Calder and Boyars. 1967. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s black cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the striking typographic dust jacket. A very good or better copy, the cloth clean and bright, the spine tips and corners just very gently bumped. The binding tight and square, the contents clean and fine throughout. The dust jacket unclipped (25s net), the corners and tips rubbed with several small creases and light marks.

The author’s second novel after his successful 'Europe After the Rain (1965). Burns was a major figure in B. S. Johnson’s avant-garde London literary group, which also included Eva Figes, Christine Brooke-Rose and Ann Quin among others. This attempt follows the lives (and one death) of a father, his two sons, and a woman tangled up in all three men. The setting, a factory, nods to Burns’ lifelong socialism. His early works are uncommon.
