BRUN, Vincenz. Alcibiades: Forsaken by Gods and Men. Trans. from the German. London: Putnam. 1936. 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher’s dark blue cloth lettered in black to the spine, in the striking dust jacket by Rex Whistler. A near fine example, the cloth with one or two minor marks, the boards firm, the binding tight and square. The textblock with a few light spots, the contents clean and mostly fine throughout with a few minor spots, no inscriptions or stamps. The dust jacket unclipped with price sticker of 5/- net to front flap, very gently bumped with one or two tiny closed tears, but a very presentable example.

The uncommon sequel to the author’s two-volume historical fiction epic following the 5th Century Athenian, Alcibiades, in his remarkable rise and inevitable fall—the first volume subtitled ‘Beloved by Gods and Men’. While the first volume follows what Thucydides called his ‘exceedingly ambitious’ rise to prominence, this second volume follows the illustrious military career across the globe as Alcibiades, while hailed as myth-like and near-demigod in his own lifetime, also made sworn enemies in his homeland Athens, in Persia, and in Sparta, the latter whose vengeance came, eventually, in Alcibiades’ assassination. Favourably reviewed and now drawing likeness in importance and craft to Graves’ I, Claudius. Scarce.
