The Italian’s third published book and first collection of stories, all based on his hometown of Ferrara, documenting individual yet interlinking lives in the city amid ‘the gradual seeping of fascism and anti-semitism’. Bassani, born into a respectable Jewish family, was part of the anti-fascist resistance and spent time incarcerated in the fight. Postwar, he won almost every Italian literary award and played a crucial role in publishing various important Italian novels, most notably Giuseppe di Lampedusa’s The Leopard, which had been rejected by several publishers prior.
