BARKER, George. The Dead Seagull. London: John Lehmann. 1950. 8vo. First edition. Publisher’s pale red cloth lettered in gilt to the spine panel, in the striking dust jacket designed by Humphrey Spender. A near fine copy, the book clean, bright and sharp, the binding tight and square, the contents fine despite a few faint spots to the textblock edges. The dust jacket unclipped (7s 6d net) and complete, small closed tears, gentle rubbing to corners and spine tips, but a bright and pleasing example overall.

The poet’s first novel, written in response to Elizabeth Smart’s wonderfully evocative confessional novel, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept (1945), the pair of novels hymns their liaison.
