ATKINSON, M. E. Mystery Manor (signed association copy)

£75.00

ATKINSON, Mary Evelyn. Mystery Manor. London: The Bodley Head. 1937. 8vo. First edition, first printing. Publisher’s blue cloth lettered in gilt to the spine, in the rare albeit tatty dust jacket designed by Harold Jones, who illustrates the volume. This copy signed and inscribed by the author to the illustrator, Jones, at the half-title; ‘“H. J.” with much gratitude’. The book good, gently rubbed at the spine tips and corners, slightly rubbed along joints. The binding fairly tight and a trifle rolled, split at gutter of p.320, but holding well. The contents clean throughout. The dust jacket unclipped (7s 6d net), in two pieces with split to front panel joint, spine toned, small nicks and gentle rubbing to all edges, some toning elsewhere, nevertheless uncommon, and altogether unique with association inscription.

Atkinson’s second volume in her popular Lockett series published in uniform to the first volume (August Adventure). Atkinson’s early novels mark some of the earliest commissions for the inimitable Harold Jones, who wrote children’s books himself. The pair evidently struck up a strong working relationship, collaborating as writer/illustrator for more than half a dozen other works, all of which adorned with highly visual dust jackets and the black and white illustrations which brought Atkinson’s stories to life.
